Is God and Jesus the Same Person?

This is one of the most if not the most important questions someone can ask, ” is Jesus the same person as God?”. Short answer is, Jesus is not the same Person as God the Father but He is the same Being as the Father. Here is the difference. Person is what the thing is, Being is who the thing is. For example, You are a Human being, that is what you are, but, you are kind, loving, generous and caring, that is who you are.

Based on the example given, we can clearly say that Jesus is God because He is the same being as the father and they share the same attributes but in different Persons. If that is the case, where in the scripture can we prove that Jesus is God. If you want to learn more visit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DEaZdkubrI

There are very many verses that show Jesus is really God and we are going to take a look at them. We are going to look at 6 verses that prove Jesus is the true God.

1. The Direct Claim Jesus is God ( John 10:30)

The context in this verse was, Jesus was speaking to the Jewish leaders and they wanted to stone Him for blasphemy. In the the book of John 10:30 Jesus says ” I and the Father are one” As previously explained, in this particular verse, Jesus claims to have the same divinity as the father. This verse shows that Jesus is God in the same essence but in a different person.

Is Jesus God? This first answer does simply show that because no one in the whole universe can say that they are the same being as the Heavenly Father, that will be considered blasphemy against God because you are claiming to be the same as the creature of the universe. So, the real meaning behind the infamous verse is that Jesus is claiming divinity to be God. If this verse shows Jesus is really God, then why did He weep?. Visit Jesus Wept. Why Did Jesus Weep?

2. Jesus as the Eternal Word.(John 1:1, 14)

The second verse that proves Jesus is God is found In the Gospels. In the Gospels, Jesus is said to be the Word of God. In the book of John 1:1, 14 it says ”In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” It is very clear from that verse it is talking about Jesus.

John, one of the closest disciple of Jesus say that Jesus was in the beginning, and He was there with the Father and later took flesh and dwelt among men. He is not saying that Jesus did not exist before time, He was there with the Father and He is the eternal word.

No one can claim to be the word of God and also claim to be in the beginning of time. What John is trying to tell us is that, Jesus is God because He existed before time and He was present with the Father in the beginning.

3. Jesus as the Creator of all Things.( Colossians 1:16)

The Apostle Paul writes this in Colossians 1:16, “For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through Him and for Him.”

Paul wrote Colossians 1:16 to combat a ‘Jesus-plus’ Gospel. The Colossians were being told Jesus was a great start, but they needed angels and rituals to finish the job. Paul corrected them by showing that Jesus isn’t just a piece of the puzzle—He is the one who made the board and the pieces.

From that verse, Jesus is seen as the creator of all things here on earth and in Heaven and everything was made through Him for Him. Well if that is the case, this means that Jesus was not created as critics say because if He was created He would have been part of the creation but since He is the creator of all things visible and invisible He must be God.

F.F. Bruce (20th Century New Testament Scholar)

“He is the intermediate agent in creation… the universe was created in Him, as the sphere of its existence; through Him, as the instrument of its making; and for Him, as the goal of its being.”

The Point: Bruce emphasizes that Jesus isn’t just a “helper,” but the reason the universe exists.

4. The Lords Prayer( Mathew 6:9-13)

This prayer is the most famous prayer in Christianity given by Jesus on the sermon on the mount. He gave the audience a prayer which they would use when praying to God and it went like this “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Now you are wondering, how does the Lords prayer prove that Jesus is God? Well if we take a closer look at the prayer, we see Jesus teaching a group of people on how to pray, notice the beginning of the prayer ”Our Father”. When Jesus prayed, He did not say ” My Father in Heaven” or ” My Heavenly Father” as we do when we pray, He simply said ”Father”. There is no one who can pray and directly call God ” Father” without adding the prefix ” Heavenly” at the start of the prayer.

When we say ”Our heavenly Father”, we are exalting God because we do not know Him or seen Him that is why we humbly say it as a sign of faith showing that even if we have never seen we will still call you ”our heavenly Father”. This case does not apply to Jesus because He is the begotten of the Father and He knows the Father as we are told in John 10:15 and He has seen the Father as written in the previous verse.

5.Forgiving of Sins( Mark 2:10)

In the book of Mark 2:10, Jesus makes a massive claim by calling himself the “Son of Man” and claiming the “authority to forgive sins.” Now we all know the only person who can forgive sins is God but Jesus is saying He does forgive sins thus claiming Himself to be God.

He also calls Himself ”Son of Man”. Now so that we do not get confused on the terminology between ”Son of God” and ”Son of Man” is this. Back in Jerusalem, it was ok to call yourself son of God, but the minute you said you are the ” Son of Man” it was considered heresy. For clear and better understanding, consider them meaning the total opposite.

While it sounds like a humble human title, it is actually a reference to Daniel 7:13-14. In that prophecy, a “Son of Man” comes before God and is given “dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him.”

Jesus reads the minds of the religious leaders and offers a “test.” He argues that saying “your sins are forgiven” is easy because no one can see if it actually happened. But healing a paralyzed man is visible. By doing the “visible” miracle, he proves he has the power to do the “invisible” forgiveness.

6. Jesus as Lord of the Sabbath( Mark 2;28)

Charles Spurgeon once said this in regards to Mark 2:28 “If Christ be the Lord of the Sabbath, he must be divine. None but the Creator could have power over an ordinance which dates from the creation. He who is the Master of the Law must be the Giver of the Law. Jesus did not come to break the Sabbath, but to claim it as His own property.”

This is another powerful verse that shows Jesus is God. Now lets get the context behind the verse so as to understand why it is important. The story starts in a grain field on a Saturday. Jesus and His disciples were walking, and because they were hungry, the disciples picked some grain to eat.

Right away, the Pharisees—the religious leaders—got upset. They weren’t mad that the disciples were taking grain; they were mad because it was the Sabbath. To them, picking grain was “working,” and they had very strict rules against any kind of work on God’s day of rest.

Jesus doesn’t apologize. Instead, He reminds them of King David. He tells them about a time when David and his men were hungry and entered the house of God to eat the special holy bread that only priests were allowed to touch. Jesus is showing them that meeting human needs is more important than following a religious ritual. He tells them plainly: “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” He is saying that God gave us the day of rest as a gift, not as a burden or a trap.

But then, Jesus says something even more powerful. He calls Himself the “Lord of the Sabbath.” Think about what that means. The Sabbath was started by God at the very beginning of the world. Only the person who created the day has the right to say how it should be used.

By calling Himself the Lord of the Sabbath, Jesus is telling the Pharisees—and us—that He is God. He isn’t just a teacher following the rules; He is the Creator who made the rules. He has the authority to define the Sabbath because He is the one who gave it to us in the first place.

conclusion
