How To Pray When Under Spiritual Attack. Learn 7 Ways on Combating Spiritual Warfare.

Have you ever felt like everything around you has suddenly started to fall apart? It’s like there is this invisible force working against you. Your plans are failing, and you really do not feel the presence of God within you.

A couple of years ago this was my experience. Almost nothing in my life was not going as planned and my personal connection with God was hanging on to a thread. I had trouble sleeping and trying to figure out what on earth was happening in my life. I felt crushed, confused and alone.

It was not until I went to a seminar in our local area where the preacher happened to be talking about spiritual attacks. When he paused the question to the audience ” Who is currently feeling like their life is under spiritual attack” I saw dozens of hands raised. I came to understand that I was not the only one experiencing this.

What I learnt that day really transformed my life in a way I never thought possible. I can assure you the attacks did not stop immediately, but I learnt how to pray with authority and biblical strategy.

I am going to share with you tips on how to combat spiritual attacks at any given time. But before we get into that, let me clarify what a spiritual attack is.

What is Spiritual Attack?

Before we jump right in, we need to understand what we are up against. We are given clarity from the book of Ephesians 6:12.

”For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms”

A spiritual attack is a deliberate attempt by evil forces to distract, discourage and to pull you away from God’s purpose in your life. The enemy’s goal is to stop you from following Jesus, destroy your faith, damage your relationships and prevent you from fulfilling your true purpose in Christ.

But here is the bitter truth: not everything is a spiritual attack. We live in a fallen world and sometimes struggle is part of life in a broken world.

How to Recognize You Are Under Spiritual Attack

Multiple Problems Happening Simultaneously – Several areas of your life seem to be falling apart at once, and the timing feels unusually coordinated.

Sudden, Overwhelming Discouragement – You feel defeated and hopeless without clear reason. Thoughts like “God has abandoned me” flood your mind.

Sleep Disturbances and Nightmares – Recurring bad dreams, sleep paralysis, or waking up more exhausted than when you went to bed.

Unexplained Physical Symptoms – Constant exhaustion despite rest, mysterious illnesses that doctors can’t explain, or feeling drained after certain interactions.

Relationship Conflicts Escalating – Sudden fights with people you normally get along with, misunderstandings spiraling out of control, feeling isolated from your support system.

Financial Doors Slamming Shut – Unexpected financial losses, opportunities disappearing at the last minute, money problems despite responsible management.

Mental and Spiritual Fog – Difficulty concentrating on prayer or Scripture, intrusive negative thoughts, sudden doubts about your faith, temptations intensifying in areas you’ve had victory over.

Feeling Spiritually Dry – Prayer feels like hitting a brick wall, worship feels empty, you can’t sense God’s presence like you normally do.

The key is the pattern and intensity. If multiple signs appear suddenly and simultaneously, you’re likely experiencing spiritual attacks.

Understanding the Three Sources of Spiritual Attack

The Bible identifies three distinct sources of spiritual attack. Understanding where the attack comes from helps you pray more effectively.

1. The Devil (External Enemy)

Satan is a real spiritual being whose goal is to steal, kill, and destroy. He attacks through deception, accusation, temptation, and opposition. Remember the Garden of Eden? Satan approached Eve with a subtle question: “Did God really say…?” He plants doubt, twists truth, and makes evil look attractive.

Prayer focus: Authority in Christ, declaring truth, resisting the enemy.

2. The Flesh (Internal Weakness)

This is your own sinful nature—the part of you still drawn to rebellion against God. James 1:14-15 explains that each person is tempted when dragged away by their own evil desire. Your flesh wants immediate gratification, comfort, and control.

Prayer focus: Confession, repentance, surrendering your desires to God.

3. The World (Cultural Pressure)

The “world” refers to broken systems, cultural norms, and societal values that stand opposed to God’s kingdom. The world makes sin look normal, attractive, and desirable, creating pressure to conform to values that contradict Scripture.

Prayer focus: Renewing your mind, seeking God’s kingdom first, resisting cultural conformity.
Many times, all three work together. The world normalizes sin, your flesh desires it, and the enemy provides the opportunity. Your prayers need to address all three fronts.

The Right Approach: Praying From Victory Not For Victory

This is the most critical mindset shift you need to make when learning how to pray during spiritual attacks.

Many Christians pray like this: “God, please help me win this battle.” This approach comes from fear and treats the battle as uncertain.

Biblical warfare prayer sounds like this: “Father, because Jesus defeated the enemy at the cross, I stand in that victory right now. I’m not asking IF you’ll help me—I’m thanking you that the battle is already won.”

When Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead, He didn’t just win a personal victory—He won THE victory. Colossians 2:15 says He “disarmed the powers and authorities, making a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.”

The enemy is already defeated. You’re not fighting FOR victory; you’re fighting FROM victory. This changes everything about how you pray.

Now let’s get practical. Here are the non-negotiable elements your prayers must include when you’re under spiritual attack.

1. Start With Worship And Thanksgiving

Before asking God for anything, begin by worshiping Him for who He is and thanking Him for what He has done. Worship draws your heart closer to God and reminds you of His greatness, while thanksgiving shifts your focus from problems to His faithfulness.

As a beginner in Christ I used to rush directly to what was on my mind. I did not take time to give thanks to the Lord because I was soo blinded by my thoughts.

I later realized that when you honor God first, you invite His presence and power into your prayers. The Bible says, “Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise” (Psalm 100:4). As you lift your voice in gratitude, burdens lift, faith rises, and peace fills your heart. True prayer begins with heartfelt worship and thanksgiving.

2. Confession And Repentance

After worship, take time to confess your sins and repent sincerely before God. Confession keeps your heart pure and your relationship with God open. When you acknowledge your wrongs, you invite His mercy and cleansing power into your life.

The Bible says, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us” (1 John 1:9). Repentance is more than saying “I’m sorry”—it’s turning away from sin and choosing to walk in obedience. A humble and repentant heart prepares the way for God to hear your prayers and pour out His grace and restoration upon you.

You might think that there would be nothing to confess and repent about, but God sees your heart. Acknowledging that you are not perfect in the eyes of God is a major step towards God’s grace and mercy. So make sure you repent and confess before the Lord.

3. Putting On The Full Armor Of God

Before facing any spiritual attack, clothe yourself in the full armor of God. This means standing firm in His truth, righteousness, and peace, while holding onto faith as your shield.

The Armor of God protects your mind, heart, and spirit from the enemy’s schemes. As Ephesians 6:11 says, “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” Pray daily for God’s strength to guard you in every battle. When you are fully armed in His Word and Spirit, no spiritual attack can overcome the power of Christ within you.

You cannot rely on your intelligence or wisdom when under spiritual attacks. You need God’s guidance in all ways possible to be victorious.

4. Plead The Blood of Jesus

There’s no greater protection than the blood of Jesus. In prayer, say, “Lord, I plead the blood of Jesus over my life, my mind, my home, and everything that concerns me.” The blood of Jesus represents His victory over sin, darkness, and the enemy.

The blood of Jesus covers you, cleanses you, and breaks every chain of fear and oppression. Revelation 12:11 reminds us, “They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony.” As you pray, declare that no power of darkness can stand against the blood of Jesus.

5. Speak Directly To The Attack

When you are under spiritual attack, do not remain silent; instead, pray in authority. As a believer, you have power through the name of Jesus to command the enemy to flee. Begin by declaring God’s Word out loud. Say, “In the name of Jesus Christ, I rebuke every spirit of fear, doubt, and confusion. You have no power over my life, my mind, or my home.”

Refer to the scripture as your weapon against the attacks. Speak boldly, not in fear but in faith, knowing the Word of God never fails. When you speak truth in prayer, you shift the atmosphere and silence the lies of the enemy.

Keep declaring God’s promises until peace fills your heart. Remember, victory in spiritual warfare begins when you speak God’s truth with faith and confidence. Remind the enemy he has already been defeated on the cross.

Jesus’ death and resurrection sealed your victory forever. When you speak God’s Word with faith, the spiritual atmosphere shifts, and darkness loses its hold. Keep declaring, “I am covered by the blood of Jesus, and no weapon formed against me shall prosper.”

6. Bind And Loose

When facing a spiritual attack, use the authority Jesus gave you to bind and loose. In Matthew 18:18, Jesus said, “Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

Begin by binding every work of darkness that tries to operate in your life. Pray boldly: “In the name of Jesus, I bind every spirit of fear, depression, confusion, and spiritual oppression. You have no power or place in my life.”

Then, loose God’s power and blessings. Declare, “I loose peace, joy, clarity, strength, and divine protection over my mind and home.” This is not about human strength—it’s about standing in the authority Christ gave you through His victory on the cross.

Remember, the enemy is already defeated, but you must enforce that victory daily through prayer, faith, and the Word of God. If you feel weak in Spirit, take a look at this article Walking in the Spirit which will guide you to strengthen your Spirit.

7. Pray Scripture Back To God

One of the most powerful ways to pray is by speaking God’s word back to Him. You have to understand the bible is not just a book but a living sword of the Spirit that defeats every lie of the enemy.

As you pray, use Scripture to remind yourself of God’s promises. Say, “Lord, Your Word declares that no weapon formed against me shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17). You promised to give me peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7).”

When you pray Scripture, you align your heart with God’s truth and activate His power in your situation. The enemy cannot stand against the Word of God spoken in faith. Keep declaring verses that strengthen your spirit and remind you of who you are in Christ. God honors His Word, and when you pray it back to Him, a breakthrough begins to happen.

When You Are Too Weak To Pray

  1. There are moments in every believer’s life when the battle feels too heavy and words don’t come easily. During a spiritual attack, you may feel drained, discouraged, or even distant from God. But even in that weakness, the Holy Spirit is interceding for you (Romans 8:26). When you don’t know what to say, here’s how to stand firm and keep your spirit connected to God:
  • Be Honest with God
You don’t have to sound strong when you’re not. Tell God exactly how you feel—tired, broken, or afraid. He already knows, and He listens with compassion. Sometimes the most powerful prayer is simply, “Lord, help me.”
  • Rest in God’s Presence
Sit quietly before the Lord. You don’t always need to speak—just be still. Let His peace surround you. As Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still, and know that I am God.” In silence, He renews your strength and calms your heart.
  • Worship Through the Weakness
Turn on a worship song, even if you can’t sing along. Worship shifts your focus from the battle to the One who already won the victory. As your heart begins to worship, the atmosphere around you changes—peace replaces fear, and hope rises again.
  • Pray in the Spirit
If you have the gift of praying in tongues, use it. When you pray in the Spirit, the Holy Spirit prays perfectly through you, even when your mind feels overwhelmed. It builds up your faith and strengthens your inner man (Jude 1:20).
  • Use Short, Powerful Prayers
When you can’t pray long, pray short but full of faith. Say, “Jesus, I trust You.” “Lord, fight for me.” “Cover me with Your blood.” The power is not in many words but in your heart’s surrender.
  • Lean on Scripture
Open your Bible and read aloud verses of comfort and strength. Scriptures like Isaiah 40:29—“He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless”—remind you that your weakness is the very place where God’s power works best.
  • Ask Others to Pray for You
There is strength in agreement. Reach out to a trusted believer or prayer partner and let them stand in the gap for you. You are not alone in this battle.

Even when you’re too weak to pray, God is not silent. He’s fighting for you, surrounding you with His love, and turning your weakness into strength through His Spirit.

Conclusion. Standing Strong In The Midst of Spiritual Attack

Spiritual attacks are real, but they are not greater than the power of God working within you. As a fellow believer, I can truly say that this journey is not easy. Spiritual attacks will happen randomly in your life, and the sad truth is they will never stop.

Every believer will face moments of warfare—times when the enemy tries to weaken your faith, cloud your mind, or steal your peace. Yet, through prayer, worship, and the Word of God, you can overcome every battle.

From what we have discussed, we see that prayer is not just a response to spiritual attack—it is a powerful weapon of victory. Through worship, repentance, and declaring God’s Word, believers are equipped to stand firm against the enemy’s schemes.

We’ve learned that pleading the blood of Jesus, wearing the armor of God, and praying Scripture back to Him strengthens our faith and shifts the atmosphere. Even in weakness, God’s presence sustains us, and His Spirit intercedes on our behalf. Every battle reminds us that the enemy is already defeated, and through Christ, we walk daily in triumph and peace.
