How to Study the Bible for Beginners: 9 Effective Tips

If there is one thing I am for certain of, it is that every single person who loves the word of God was once exactly where you are right now. Every theologian, pastor, apologist, and, to your surprise, even the pope was once where you are.

Back in 2019, this was kinda the similar story for me as a beginner in Gods word. As I went through the Bible I had little knowledge on how I should be engaged with the word of God. I experienced a hard time trying to understand what the Bible was trying to say. After a few months I uncovered the blueprint on how to read and understand the Bible.

Here, I will share the steps on how to study the Bible effectively as a beginner and gain a deeper understanding of God’s word. At the end, you will get to understand that Bible study is not about perfection, but rather it’s about connection.

Getting Started: Your Bible Study Foundation

Before we jump right in, there are some things that need clarity and understanding before anything else. These things are;

Choose your translation.

Choosing a bible translation that suits you is one of the major factors you have to consider before engaging in Bible study. Pick a Bible translation that is easy for you to read and understand. But since you are a beginner i would highly recommend one of these translations.

  • NIV (New International Version) – Clear, contemporary language
  • NLT (New Living Translation) – Conversational and easy to understand
  • ESV (English Standard Version) – Beautiful language that’s still accessible

Create your sacred place

Have a place somewhere in your house or even outside of your house that you feel comfortable to engage yourself with the Word of God.

It could be your garage your bedroom or a place somewhere in the park. But as you make this decision, make sure its a place or a spot where your mind feels clear and there are minimum distractions.

Start with Prayer

Before you open your bible, take a minute and pray to God for guidance and understanding as you read the Bible.

A simple prayer transforms reading into relationship. One thing you have to keep in mind is that, you are not only just studying the Word of God but you are also having a conversation with God and also building a personal relationship with Him as you go deeper into the scripture.

Where to Begin. Your First Steps Into Scripture

Since we have covered some of the core foundations for your Bible study as a beginner, now we take our first steps into the Word of God.

Have you ever opened the Bible and wondered where to begin? well, you are not alone on that matter. We all, at some point, wonder where to start reading and maintaining consistency.

Well, do not worry because here we are going to cover the crucial steps that you will need to follow to study the Bible more effectively and understand its teachings as a beginner. Let’s jump right in.

1 Have a Schedule

Creating a schedule for your Bible study as a beginner is an important step for you in your early stages of Bible study.

We can’t say that we have all the time in the world, and we have nothing else to do. That would be a big lie. So, we need to find time for certain things that we see as important in our lives.

Creating a schedule not only manages your time but also helps overcome procrastination or other excuses. We currently live in a world that seems to be busy with everything. If you feel that you are too scheduled or too busy to find time to read the Bible, check out this post: How To Read The Bible When Busy.

2 Have a Goal

We cannot have a mindset that wants to achieve something without having a goal at the end.

Have a personal conversation with yourself and point out the things you would love to achieve at the end of this journey. This will act as a motivator once you start feeling a bit overwhelmed or want to give up.

3 Start With The Gospels

As a beginner, it is recommended that you start with the Gospels in the New Testament.

The reason is that for beginners, the Gospels are easier to grasp and understand than the context in the Old Testament. The Old Testament requires some theological insights to understand what the passage means, and this could be overwhelming to a beginner

First, start with Mathew, Mark, Luke, and John. After that, you can now proceed to read the other books in the New Testament.

4 The Three Chapter Challenge

This is a challenge for you as a beginner that will help you to stay consistent and active throughout.

The three-chapter challenge is, you read three chapters of a book every single time, according to your schedule. This challenge might seem a bit hard at the beginning, but with a strong mindset, it is achievable.

We can all agree that not all books can fall under this challenge because of the different chapter lengths in different books. For the ones that have short chapters, try to read five chapters, and for those chapters that may seem too long, aim for just two chapters.

5 The Authors

When reading the Bible, it is important to know who the writer was and why he wrote the book.

To not get confused as you read the scriptures, you should ask yourself some of the following questions. Who wrote the book? Who was it to? Why was it written? At what period of time was it being written? How does it connect with God?

Getting a clear understanding of these questions can really save you some trouble and give you clarity as you progress.

6 The S.O.A.P Method {Perfect for Beginners}

This is a method that has been of help to many people who had no idea how to study the bible and has helped them.

Scripture: If you come across a scripture in the Bible that you feel is personally speaking to you, write it down.

Observation: These are the things you start to notice, like, who is speaking? At what time is this happening? How did God respond? What can I learn from this?

Application: Ask yourself, how can I apply what I have read in my life?

Prayer: After reading the scripture, take a moment and ask God to give you clarity and understanding of what you have read.

7 The Question Method

As you read, ask yourself these simple questions.

  • What is it teaching me about myself?
  • Is it a prophecy?
  • Is there a promise to claim?
  • Is there a command to obey?
  • Is there an example to follow or avoid?
  • What is the passage teaching me about God?

It is not a crime not to have all the answers. Remember, you are taking your first beginner steps on this beautiful journey. Sometimes one question will yield incredible insight, while others might not apply to what you are reading.

8 Useful Tools

Since you are approaching the scripture as a beginner, you should have some basic tools that will help you understand it.

These useful tools help to have a deeper understanding of what is written. By having these basic tools, you will find it easier to understand the Word of God as you progress.

These are some of the basic tools that can help you along your spiritual journey.

  • Bible apps.
  • Study Guides.
  • Bible dictionaries.
  • A personal journal

9 Find a Community

As a beginner, in most cases, it is hard to understand most of the context that is written in the scripture.

As we all know, no Man or Woman is an island. You cannot be fully independent on everything. So, it is important to find a community you feel comfortable with that will guide you through the Word..

It could be a Bible study group, a sermon, listening to Christian based podcasts, looking at Christian youtubers or if you want more details in theology, you can check out Christian Apologists.

It is hard for a beginner to understand what he or she is reading without needing an outside source for clarity. That is why finding a community that best suits you is highly advised.

These nine essential tips provide a comprehensive roadmap for meaningful engagement with Scripture. By establishing a consistent schedule and setting clear goals, you create the discipline necessary for spiritual growth.
